What did you learn?

My research skills were honed. I learned the art of attorney/client interaction and observed court room demeanor. I also began to learn the mediation process.

Work hard, produce a great work product, listen more, speak less and soak up the vast knowledge of the very skilled attorneys at Fraser.

A typical day. . .

Most projects involve a certain amount of legal research and writing. Often, a legal issue would need to be explored and evaluated and a staff attorney would ask for specific clarification on that issue. At this firm, summer associates get a variety of pleadings, including motions, complaints, and briefs. You go to all department meetings and luncheons, which helps you get a general understanding of the firm's policies, history, and expectations.

Have a good work ethic. Keep your nose to the grindstone. Get to know the associates and partners as well as you can. Treat everyone with respect and edit all of your assignments multiple times.

The Last Word

With offices in both Detroit and Lansing, this is a firm with a statewide — not just citywide — reputation. Moreover, as the Michigan member of the State Capital Group with a primary office in Lansing, the firm's work is inherently intertwined with and affected by various governmental functions. Fraser Trebilcock Davis & Dunlap, P.C. offers the variety of practice areas only available in a big law firm, yet provides the hands-on work experience that a law student would expect only at a smaller office.
